This is our family and the man here, well he’s our father, our Babuji (ba-boo-ji). His journey started back in 1959. Before arriving in the UK Babuji decided to travel through Bangladesh, India then Pakistan, teaching, learning and eating lots on the way. In particular the street stalls of Calcutta, Mumbai, and Lahore were his favourites.

Babuji ate a lot of food, in fact he loved food. The best places to eat he said “are the cafés and street stalls, no need to go anywhere fancy”. Indeed he was right, he ventured to these small outlets because they made food that reminded him of home, the sense of home brings that warm fuzzy feeling inside, and that is exactly what we’re about.

Our food is a homage to the street vendors and Cafés of South Asia. Combining dishes that Babuji encountered in his journey. From Bengali bites, to street stall favourites of Mumbai, and traditional homely Pakistani dishes. By the way, we eat with our hands, cos that’s the Babuji way.

1961
THE IVY LONDON
Hungry for more and with itchy feet, Babuji head off to London and started working at The Ivy, with his wealth of experience he started conjuring up flavours himself to experiment with in his spare time - not all the experiment flavours were great though!
1985
KENTISH TOWN
A bold move was made to partner up with his friend and open up their very own restaurant in Kentish Town called Knights of the emperor (yep - don’t ask a weird 1980’s thing)
2000
BIRTH OF GULSHAAN
Babuji takes the restaurant business all on his own and takes his sons under his wing to show them ropes of being a restaurateur. The restaurant has a makeover with the new new Gulshaan
2019
THE SONS
The reins are handed down to the sons to takeover as Babuji retires, many cosmetic changes were done internally and things were going well but we just didn’t think the place met its full potential
2005
BABUJI
Enter a new vision. Tonnes of researching, late nights and simply going back to why and where to all started and who with…BABUJI. We went back to basics and the heart of our Father's journey of south asian street food as well as a new brand and overall new look!
2022
THE LOSS
Covid hit in 2021 and we somehow survived as a business despite the challenges however we were bearing the loss of our father the following year which was the toughest year of lives. The loss has made us even more determined to keep our fathers love for his restaurant alive as long as we can and the journey continues...

Booked here for meal before concert nearby what a great little restaurant. The food was very tasty and fresh made to taste the spices not the heat. The chickpea salad was so refreshing and tasty I could have eaten it all night. Nice wine and atmosphere Staff was excellent Only thing that lets it down is like most places now a surcharge is added but is not a tip as staff dont get any of it. Didnt pay it and hand tip straight to staff. only a small point but Bit of a bug bear with me. Would definitely recommend and we would eat there again.

Popped in here for a quick bite before a gig and we LOVED it! Excellent host and table service, great decor and plenty of seating for a smaller restaurant. Food was very tasty, good variety, generous portions packed with flavour and cooked to perfection. Lovely clean toilets. Highly recommend!

As others have rightly mentioned, the food was delicious and well made, the service is top notch and super friendly.

Only criticism: there are no Babuji locations in Colorado USA! So until that happens, we will surely visit Babuji when we are in Kentish Town.

Thanks to everyone at Babuji for providing a great time for me and my son!
